The Lebanese armed group Hezbollah launched a rocket attack on Haifa, Israel’s third largest city, on Monday. Israel has also expanded its operations in Lebanon. The events came on the anniversary of Hamas attacks on Israel and the start of the war in Gaza.

On October 7, 2023, the Palestinian independence armed organization Hamas attacked Israel. In response, Israel launched an attack on the Gaza Strip on the same day. Yesterday Monday was its one year anniversary.

Iran-backed Hezbollah is known as an ally of the Palestinian armed group Hamas. Hezbollah said on Monday it fired a Fadi 1 missile at a military base south of the city of Haifa. Apart from this, they launched another attack in Tiberias, 65 kilometers away from that place.

The armed group later said it had targeted areas north of Haifa with missile strikes.

Israel’s military said about 190 projectiles entered the country’s territory on Monday. At least 12 people were injured in these incidents.

Israel’s military also said its air force was carrying out massive bombing raids targeting Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. They also reported that two more Israeli soldiers were killed in Lebanon. This brings the number of Israeli soldiers killed inside Lebanon to 11.

Lebanon’s health ministry said several people, including 10 fire service personnel, were killed in an airstrike on a municipal building in the border area. Israel attacked Lebanon a year ago in the name of war against Hamas. Since then, nearly 2,000 people have been killed in Lebanon.

The Israeli army has described the ground operation in Lebanon as “limited” and “specific”. However, since the beginning of last week, the level of operations has increased.

Israel’s ally, the United States, believes that ground operations in Lebanon will continue on a limited scale. Matthew Miller, spokesman for the US State Department, said this on Monday.

On Monday, US President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump—all marked the anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel. Kamala is running for the Democratic Party and Trump is running for the Republican Party in the US presidential election to be held on November 5.

Israeli troops are moving south into Lebanon. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said their goal was to clear the border areas used by Hezbollah. They don’t want to go deep into Lebanon.
