Like Myanmar and Thailand, there is a risk of similar major earthquakes in Bangladesh. Especially Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet and Mymensingh regions are at high risk of earthquakes.
The Fire Service Headquarters issued this warning in a press release this Saturday morning after the massive casualties caused by the strong earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand on Friday.
The press release said that two strong earthquakes have occurred in different regions of Myanmar and Thailand in succession. The magnitude of the two earthquakes was 7.7 and 6.4 on the Richter scale, respectively. Both countries have suffered considerable damage. There is a risk of similar major earthquakes in Bangladesh too. Especially Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet and Mymensingh regions are at high risk.
The Fire Service says that to combat earthquakes, earthquake-resistant buildings must be built according to the Bangladesh National Building Code. Risky and old buildings must be renovated. Fire prevention measures must be strengthened in multi-storied and commercial buildings.
In addition, it is necessary to ensure that the gas, water and electricity lines are in good condition. Emergency telephone numbers such as fire service, ambulance, police, hospital and other emergency numbers should be stored in all buildings or establishments, as well as at the personal level. These should be written in a visible place.
Emergency equipment such as flashlights, radios (with extra batteries), whistles, hammers, helmets, dry food, drinking water, essential medicines and childcare items should be stored in designated places in the house.
